Lunch Seminar - FLL Airport 

Please join us on Wednesday, December 3rd at our Branch Lunch Meeting as Joseph Duarte, P.E., of Atkins, will discuss the planning, design and construction of the New South Runway at the Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood International Airport (FLL)

Topics Discussed:

  • FLL Background: Brief history of the airport from 1929 to present.  Illustrating how the airport grew to become a Major Hub of the National Aviation System.  Local and national capacity, safety and redundancy conditions that required the expansion of the south runway.
  •  Runway Alternatives: Illustration of the conceptual plans developed to study and select the option approved by the FAA and the County Commissioners. Improvements to the base concept developed to reduce construction cost, increase safety and shorten the program schedule.
  •  Design Challenges: Highlight the major challenges successfully resolved by the design team to meet BCAD’s project expectation, budget, and schedule.
  •  Construction Challenges: Discuss the multiple challenges faced by the three major construction contractors to complete the project.
  •  Successful Runway Opening on September 18, 2014: Actions and strategies implemented to open the runway on the original date set by the Airport. Schedule recovery measures to meet the September 18th date without excuses.

Joseph Duarte is a senior project manager with Atkins' aviation services division. He has 37 years of program and construction management experience, with an emphasis on aviation projects. During the course of his career, he has served on more than $3 billion worth of airport projects. This experience includes the planning, design, and construction management of runways, taxiways, visual and navigational aids, aircraft parking aprons, pavement structures, access roads, storm drainage, terminal buildings, support facilities, cargo buildings, and utilities. From his extensive experience working on airport projects, he is extremely knowledgeable of all aspects of airfield, landside and terminal design, and is thoroughly familiar with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), International Air Transport Association (IATA), and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) criteria. Mr. Duarte’s current general responsibilities with Atkins include heading the construction phase services, as well as additional design element for the Expansion of Runway 9R-27L (10R-28L) at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
