Hands-on Training from the Pro's

2015 WORKSHOPS

BASIC BOOTCAMPS

We remove the obstacles stopping you from expressing your creative vision with the DSLR. For example, the Canon DSLR has over 225 menu choices. You need a guide to get you started with the right menu setup and handle confusions you may have.  Basic bootcamps for Lighting and Editing are also aimed to get you up and running and your films looking more professional.

 ADVANCED BOOTCAMPS

Advanced Workshops are the second tier of workshops - the Pro Level of CineBootCamps.

You'll achieve the satisfaction of expressing yourself creatively as you learn hands-on camera operation, lighting and editing from the pro's.

You'll take your creativity up to pro levels and achieve the satisfaction of producing aesthetic films whether you're filming documentaries, narrative dramatic scenes, or shooting film essays.

 OUR PURPOSE

CineBSatEVS

The purpose of our CineBootCamps is to give you hands-on experience so you graduate with the confidence.

We gear our courses to your experience level, so whether you need the BASICS or are ready for the ADVANCED workshops, you'll find you improve your skillset quickly through the hands-on drills and helpful pro's to answer your questions.

Whichever workshop you take you'll be able to shoot things you're interested in like a professional DSLR filmmaker.

You'll know the proven workflows as well as the tips and tricks to help you film your dream and do it professionally.

Our CineBootCamps use the new "Active Learning Technology".  In other words, you learn by doing not listening to a lecture.

You'll learn at your own pace with "QuickStart" drills
 • You'll follow a checklist of Hands-on, Real Life training scenarios
You'll get "Tips from the Trenches"
  Your questions come first...not last
You'll hear horror stories from our "Book of No-No's"

BASIC BOOTCAMPS - Unleash your creativity

Basic Intro to DSLR Filmmaking (Jan. 10) In this one-day, hands-on workshop we answer your questions and confusions about how to film motion pictures with the DSLR and what you need to do it.  Your questions come first, not last and we have you do hands-on drills so you're confident you're ready to start filming.

Basic DSLR FIlmmaking (Jan. 17 & 18)  For this two-day workshop, we assume that you've lied your way into a job that starts Monday and you've got to learn what you need to pull off the job on Monday morning.

As one student put it, "I learned more in two days here than in two months at film school."

Joe&Fletch

DAY ONE - We'll review menu setup, white balance, custom white balance, fast focus techniques, rigs, lighting, audio, offloading procedures... the whole workflow.  AND we have you drill it 'til you've got it.

DAY TWO - We all you've learned to film scenes from a short movie. We critique your shots and discuss alternate approaches. You and your classmates' shots are edited into a short film and an original music score added and we release it on Vimeo with your name in the credits.  So you've got CRED right away.  If it's good enough we enter it in film festivals so you can get IMDB credit too.

Basic Lighting for DSLR Filmmaking (Jan.24, Mar. 14, Aprll 11) This one day workshop is one of our filmmakers favorites because it's the key to rich, beautiful, artistic images.  We go through the simplicities involved in great lighting.  You'll light scenes using simple tips from pros we've worked with. You'll move your lighting skills from "okay" to "wow".  We cover how to add depth to the shot, where to put the key, the importance of the catchlight, how to shape light on location, how to use the existing light on documentary-style filming, ISOs to use, we redefine high key and low key lighting and much, much more.

Basic Editing for DSLR Filmmaking (Jan. 25, Mar. 15, Apr. 12) Editing is the key to telling great stories with your great shots. This workshop is designed to get you past the stumbling blocks that confuse and compromise the work of novice editors.  It doesn't have to be so difficult.  So your questions come first and then we'll guide you though the jungle of technobabble and misinformation and give you proven procedures to follow to get a professional look for your films. We feature Adobe Premiere Pro but we also have Final Cut Pro X editors if you want to pursue that software.

ADVANCED BOOTCAMPS - Pro Level Excellence

CineBootCamps Pro Level 1 & 2 (March 7 & 8, Apr. 4 & 5) This is the flagship course we offer.  Using Active Learning Technology you'll do hands-on drills so you're confident you can film like a pro.

The following topics are covered:

  • Proper menu set-up for filming
  • How to use histograms, do custom white balance and fast focusing techniques.
  • Pragmatic "production-proven" methods to shoot your film.
  • Hands-on drills to make you smooth and confident.
  • The simple key to lighting and audio.
  • Camera support systems.
  • What cards to use and which cards to avoid.
  • How to offload your card.
  • The key elements to good green screen production.
  • The "Book of Boo-Boos" (mistakes others have made filming with DSLRs.)
  • Mystical stuff that happened to us in filmmaking.
  • Entertaining lessons in how to survive as a filmmaker.

At the end of the class you take an exam to make sure you've got the key points.   You'll pass with a 100%, then you graduate. And we don't go home until everyone graduates!

Advanced Lighting for DSLR Filmmaking ( Mar. 21) You'll light like the masters.  You'll be challenged to analyze and then emulate the great lighting set-ups of the masters of light from Caravaggio, Rembrandt and Vermeer to modern greats like Januz Kaminsky and Roger Deakins.

Advanced Editing for DSLR Filmmaking (Mar. 22) Your journey to be a great editor continues with this pro-level workshop.  Hands-on drills will take you through the techniques of improving the look of your film, as well as drills on pacing, transitions, audio mixing, color timing and exporting workflows.

"Thank you for creating a space where everyone, from newbie to pro, could feel comfortable asking questions. Your explanations were concise, easy to understand, and never condescending. Really first class." Chad Slattery, Boot Camp Survivor

"When I came in this morning I didn't know how to turn the camera on.  Now I feel confident I can shoot with this camera professionally..no problem."  - Karl Morgan, Boot Camp Survivor

"I am so glad I did the Canon Boot Camp.  The very next week I got a Doritos Commercial shooting with the 7D.  The Director had his opinions about the DSLR's and the Gaffer had his opinions but I had the confidence to tell them what I learned at the Boot Camp and they went with my input. That wouldn't have happened if I hadn't done the drills and really learned the camera."     Lawrence Ribeiro, Extreme Shooter & Boot Camp Survivor
