Integrating Community Engagement and Service Learning Into Course Syllabi: A Faculty Workshop

Are you interested in integrating community engagement and/or service learning into your academic course? More and more as educators we are called to engage the community through our disciplines.  UAA has received the Carnegie designation as an engaged university since 2006; we’ve now adopted a course designation process, effective fall 2015.  This workshop will address the designation of community engaged and service learning courses and demonstrate how to integrate this high impact practice into an academic course.  Facilitators will share their experiences with community engagement and/or service learning, and serve as an additional resource for those interested in course implementation.

Specific Objectives: By the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish the difference between a community engaged course and/or service learning course at UAA
  • Implement community engagement and/or service learning into their existing academic course at UAA
  • Revise a syllabus to effectively implement community engagement and/or service learning at UAA

Products/Materials: Each participant will receive a variety of community engagement and/or service learning resources.

Additional Note: Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of a course syllabus of which they would like to integrate community engagement and/or service learning.
