The Homestretch Reno Premier Free Screening

The Youth Network Initiative (You’N-I) was developed to engage the community in  helping homeless and struggling youth as well as youth aging out of the foster care system. Two community convenings were held throughout 2014, to identify and address unmet needs of struggling youth in our area. Over 300 people participated in these community conversations, including more than 80 youth.

RenoYouthNetwork.com was launched in September 2014. As an on-line go-to guide, RenoYouthNetwork provides youth and services providers direct access to organizations and agencies throughout the Washoe County area. There are over 180 organizations included within this online resource directory, offering 220 distinct services.

You’N-I (Youth Network Initiative) will start 2015 with the third in a series of community convenings. This time, the community is invited to attend the free Reno premiere of a powerful documentary, The Homestretch.

The Homestretch follows three homeless teens as they fight to stay in school, graduate, and build a future. Each of these smart, ambitious teenagers – Kasey, Anthony and Roque – will surprise, inspire, and challenge audiences to rethink stereotypes of homelessness as they work to complete their education while facing the trauma of being alone and abandoned at an early age. Through haunting images, intimate scenes, and first-person narratives, these teens take us on their journeys of struggle and triumph. As their stories unfold, the film connects us deeply with larger policy issues of juvenile justice, immigration, foster care, and LGBT rights.

After the movie, The Eddy House will announce the establishment of a new and much needed seven-days-a-week downtown youth drop-in center for homeless and challenged youth. The drop-in center’s primary goal is to provide struggling youth with a safe, user-friendly location where they can access basic needs and supportive services.

Will you please join us for the movie and the Eddy House Announcement? You’N-I is bringing this documentary to Reno because it is a way to enlarge the pool of interested stakeholders, to move bystanders to action, and to engage supporters in helping our youth improve their lives and find their place in our community. We hope you will leave inspired to action and equipped with steps you can take to help a struggling young person trying to make a life in Reno without a parent.
