The morning opens with our Annual Chapter Meeting. All who attend will receive one CE.  AMTA members and nonmembers are welcome to attend!

We'll catch up on Chapter business, introduce our new volunteers, and connect with networking. Then enjoy an inspirational Keynote by Martha Menard, who will help connect the dots between what we do and why research enhances our table experience.

                      Who We Are: Engagement in Massage Therapy

What does it mean for massage therapy, as a profession, to be engaged locally, nationally, or internationally? As massage becomes more integrated into health care systems, it is important for therapists to bring all of our abilities to our work. Dr. Menard will examine the role research can play in massage therapy.

Oncology Massage Essentials  4 CEs

with Lauren Cates

This overview of the essential considerations of working with clients in cancer treatment, or a history of treatment, will explain why “just working lightly” is not enough.  Learn how to ask the right questions to make smart referrals and how to take the next step to work with this unique population.

Lauren teaches and speaks around the world about oncology massage.  She has a private practice and provides massage at four hospitals in Washington, DC.  She has participated in oncology massage research and co-teaches a 9-day in-hospital training course for massage therapists. www.lighthold.org



Introduction to Lymphatic Drainage for the Sinuses  4 CEs

Do you have clients who get congested lying prone or deal with painful sinus pressure and headaches?  Manual Lymphatic Drainage reduces lymphatic congestion and stagnation that occur with illnesses. Learn a basic series of techniques to drain the face, head, and neck in order to reduce that sinus pressure and pain. Please bring a massage table, pillow, sheets and oil or lotion.

The Mystery of Pain 4CEs

The Mystery of Pain will explore how pain is perceived, transmitted, and changed by multiple influences. The more deeply you understand the anatomy of pain, the more power you have to influence it and increase your effectiveness with clients who hurt.

Douglas Nelson has been a massage therapist since 1977 and is the founder of Precision Neuromuscular Therapy. His teaching institute conducts about 100 seminars annually. His massage clinic, BodyWork Associates, has been serving Champaign, IL since 1982 and has sixteen massage therapists. The Case for Case Reports: Planning and Conducting a Publishable Case Report 4 CEs

with Martha Menard

Participants will learn the basics of planning, conducting, and writing a case report for publication. Guidelines for deciding on a study design and measurement tools, and solutions for common problems in data collection will be discussed. Participants will leave with a detailed plan for developing their idea into a publishable case report. Please bring an idea for a case study and what you use to take notes. 

Martha Brown Menard, PhD, LMT, authored Making Sense of Research. The director of the Crocker Institute, a partner in creating CaseRe3, an open access repository of case reports in integrative health care, Dr. Menard also serves as research faculty in the School of Mind-Body Medicine at Saybrook University, and is an editor for the journal Global Advances in Health and Medicine.
