“Trauma Informed Play Therapy”

Trauma is often the underlying factor in the social, emotional and behavioral problems of children. Trauma informed care is imperative for children. This workshop is designed to provide a functional understanding of trauma and its pervasive, long-term impact on young children. A trauma informed approach will change how you work with children, your view children and how you see the play. It will increase professionals’ understanding of the effect of trauma on the developing brain of young children and its impact on all areas of development and social emotional wellness. How trauma is revealed through play and play therapy interventions that address trauma will be discussed. Video and case studies will be used to explore trauma and children. Learning Objectives: 1-Understand trauma and its impact on children’s social emotional wellness 2-Understand the effect of trauma on all areas of child development and brain structure 3- Recognize how trauma is manifested in behavior and play of young children 4- Understand how play therapy techniques address trauma symptoms
"Bringing Play into Supervision"

This 3-hour, small-group experience will draw upon the play therapist’s own caseload for guidance from an eclectic perspective as well as one that also strengthens the therapist’s ability to manage transference and countertransference issues in the playroom. Learning Objectives: 1- Understand supervisory caseload from an eclectic perspective 2- Recognize transference issues in the palyroom 3-Recognize contertransference issues in the payroom.
About the Presenters
Roxanne Grobbel, JD, LCSW, RPT-S has focused her career on infant and children’s mental health and trauma and is an Infant Mental Health Specialist and Registered Play
Therapy Supervisor. She has been an active advocate for quality services for young children and has designed curriculum, workshops and instructional materials to train professionals in providing effective therapies. She continues to train professionals in play therapy, infant mental health and trauma. She conducts workshops at local, state, and national levels. Ms. Grobbel has also developed and directed award winning mental health
programs for children and families. She has years of experience as a clinician, supervisor and Clinical Director. Ms. Grobbel works with adults and children struggling with a range of challenges in her private practice in Boca Raton. She utilizes a variety of clinical models including, Play Therapy and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). She is a Certified EMDR therapist and is a Consultant-in-Training. Ms. Grobbel coauthored a chapter, “Play Therapy Techniques with Very Young At-Risk Children in Child Care Settings” for a book edited by Charles Schaefer and published in 2008. She is currently Co-President of the Palm Beach Martin County Chapter for the Florida Association for Play Therapy. Ms. Grobbel received her law degree from Wayne State University and a master’s degree in Social Work from Florida Atlantic University.

Lawrence Rubin, Ph.D., LMHC, RPT-S, is a Professor of Counselor Education at St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida, where he directs the Mental Health Counseling Program and is a Psychologist, Mental Health Counselor and Play Therapist in private practice. Dr. Rubin is former president of the Florida Association for Play Therapy, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Association for Play Therapy as Chair. His research interests and publications lie at the intersection of Psychology and Popular Culture. His books include 'Play-based Interventions for children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders', 'Diagnosis and Treatment Planning Skills for Mental Health Professionals: A Popular Casebook Approach', 'Popular Culture in Counseling, Psychotherapy and Play-based Intervention' and 'Using Superheroes in Counseling and Play Therapy.
