An introduction to toxicology

  • Dose and response
  • Routes of exposure to harmful art products

 Common chemicals of concern in the arts

  • Flammable and toxic solvents
  • Corrosive photo chemicals, etchants, patinas and pickles
  • Toxic pigments, dyes and vehicles
  • Reactive and toxic photo chemicals, bleaches and acids

 Safer alternatives to hazardous art products

  • Reading labels and safety data sheets
  • How to identify safer solvents, pigments and acids  
  • Label limitations and greenwashing

 Protecting artist’s health and safety

  • The hierarchy of exposure control
  • Elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, PPE

 Discipline-specific guidelines (adapted to attendee’s interest and specialties)

  • Photography

 Properly storing and disposing of hazardous art products and wastes

Learning Objectives

Participants will leave the training with enhanced skills and knowledge in:

  • Identifying hazardous characteristics of the chemical products in their studios
  • Understanding how to reduce the risk of harmful exposures
  • Improving chemical storage and labeling practices
  • Understanding how to collect, process and dispose of hazardous waste
  • Knowing where to go to get more reliable information on these topics

Workshop Presenters

Dave Waddell—Senior Environmental Investigator, Pollution Prevention Inspector, School Laboratory, and Art Chemical Hazards Project Management for King County, Washington Hazardous Waste Management Program.  Dave authored the King County Laboratory Waste Management Guide, created and maintains an on-line School Chemicals Database, and created and managed the award-winning “Rehab the Lab” program. 

Stephanie D’Agostino—Pollution Prevention Section Supervisor for the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES).

Teresa Ferrara—Industrial Hygienist working for WorkWISE NH. This is the New Hampshire OSHA Consultation Program run out of Keene State College.

Eugene Benoit – An Environmental Engineer for the US Environmental Protection Agency, Eugene coordinates the Indoor Environments Program.
