At the Phoenix Conservatory of Music, we know that music is a way for us to grow, to learn and to play together.  Music can soothe our soul, lift us up, bring us closer, and teach us to work together.  We experience creativity, process based thinking, and problem solving.  We can use music as a tool to fulfill our potential; as community, as educators, as families, and as people.  Our mission is to provide quality music education that is affordable and accessible.

The State of Music Education in Arizona

In October 2014, the Arizona Department of Education and the Arizona Commission on the Arts hosted a Joint Arts Education Conference.  They released a follow-up to the 2009 Arizona Arts Education Institute Research Study conducted by Quadrant Arts Education Research.  In 2009, the study released through the Arizona Department of Education showed that Arizona schools spent less than $1 per day per student on arts education, and over 50% of Arizona schools didn’t have a budget to support arts programs.  Back then, 134,203 students attended school each day without access to music instruction provided by a highly qualified teacher.   Where are we today?

There has been a 2% increase in students who have access to arts education during the school day.  This is great, but there are still 115,487 students who still attend school without access to arts instruction provided by highly qualified teachers.  Only 62.5% of schools offer music.  In other areas of the country, public and private schools have more robust music and arts education programs. These students (the same students whom our Arizona students are competing against for admission and scholarships) are finishing high school with a high level of skill development and are set up for success in the highly competitive game of getting into post high school music programs on scholarship.

Our City Music college prep program (affiliated with the Berklee City Music Network and Berklee College of Music) allows our students who don't have as much access to music education or access to contemporary music education to level the competitive playing field, and to date, we have been successful.

In 2013, we had one senior in our program. He received a full tuition scholarship to the Berklee College of Music, valued at $144,000.00.

In 2014 we had 99 students in the program and 12 High School Seniors. 100% graduated high school.  They had a 50% acceptance rate to colleges or universities, and an additional 25% have chosen to study at their local community colleges. Together, they have earned over $445,000 in scholarships.  Congratulations, seniors!  These results are truly the efforts of a community coming together for a greater good!  This year, we have had two students do an early action audition into the Berklee College of Music.  The national acceptance rate for Berklee College of Music auditions are less than 12%.  Both of our students have been accepted into the college.

To support our programs, we are having an exclusive benefit concert at the Kerr Cultural Center in Scottsdale, Arizona on February 12, 2015.  The event will start at 6:00pm with a silent auction and networking hour, followed by a benefit concert.

For us to continue and grow this impactful and amazing program, we need support.  Join us in unleashing the power of music!  Your investment in the community through Phoenix Conservatory of Music graciously helps us to continue to provide programs that truly inspire and transform students.  Thank you for your consideration.
