COURAGE UNDER FIRE
Join us from 7-9 p.m. Feb. 12 at the NJ Historical Society in Newark for an evening of discussion about two important topics: the debate in newsrooms across the country about whether to publish the Charlie Hebdo cartoons and what citizens and journalists need to know about the arrest (and release) of news photographer Andrew Flinchbaugh in Ocean County, NJ earlier this month after police confiscated the camcorder he used to videotape the aftermath of a serious car accident. Plan for a robust discussion about free speech and its various complications.
- Come early and schmooze! Doors open at 6 p.m. for pizza.
- If you need parking, parking is available nearby in the underground Military Park Parking Garage. Thanks to the folks at NJPAC, the fee will be $12 rather than $17.
- If you are arriving by train via either Newark's Penn Station or the Broad Street station, take take the light rail to NJPAC. The Historical Society is a short walk from there.

- Edward Barocas has been the legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey since May 2001, with hands-on involvement in many of the important First Amendment ases that have determined today's case law for the rights of journalists.
- Andrew Flinchbaugh is the news photographer arrested last month in Lacey Township for refusing to surrender his camera to police, an event that went viral on YouTube.
- Thomas Healy is law professor at Seton Hall University and former journalist who is the author of the widely acclaimed book, The Great Dissent: How Oliver Wendell Holmes Changed His Mind - and Changed the History of Free Speech in America.
- Roberto Lima is the editor of the Brazilian Voice, who was arrested for not surrendering photos to Newark police in 2008.
- Bruce S. Rosen is a lawyer and former reporter and editor who frequently appears in the N.J. Supreme Court and other courts on media law issues.
