ISC Directors Training Program - Session 3  (TBL) Team-based Learning

Team-based learning was initially designed by Larry Michaelsen in the 1970s for students in business courses, and in the last decade its use in health professions education has steadily increased. In this workshop, the TBL format will be used to teach participants about the TBL process and how to design and implement TBL modules that can be used during the Immersion Phase of Curriculum 2.0.

To this end, all participants will receive articles to read prior to the session (preparation phase).  At the beginning of the workshop each participant will be assessed on their knowledge of the articles before they work in teams to come to a concensus about the best answers to the questions (readiness assurance test phase).  Finally, the teams will apply their knowledge about TBL to education scenarios as they learn how to design and implement TBL modules (application phase).  During the workshop there will be ample time for questions and discussion about the benefits and challenges of this teaching format.  The benefits and limitations of peer feedback will also be discussed.  Therefore, an added benefit of this workshop is that participants will be able to apply what they learn in the workshop to other teaching formats.
