Attract, Hire & Keep the Best of the Best!

Law enforcement agencies now face the great challenge of hiring a more talented and credential contemporary law enforcement officer in a market that appears to have a diminishing number of qualified applicants. This 2-day training workshop is designed to help administrators more effectively manage the recruitment, selection, and retention of police officers.

The hiring of a law enforcement officer is the single most important function of any law enforcement agency. It is the officers whom we hire that provide the service to our community members. The community members’ perception of the agency’s level of service is reduced to the level of service provided by the individual law enforcement officer. There is no amount of organization or equipment that can replace the human relation skills of the individual officer.

The presenter will address these questions:

  • What knowledge, skills, abilities, behaviors and traits should police agencies seek?
  • How do we determine what these qualities are?
  • Have your needs and requirements changed and how?
  • Is the candidate pool changing?
  • How do we structure our selection process and why?
  • How do we find and recruit quality employees?
  • How do we divesify our workforce?
  • How do we effectively market, particularly, to minority candidates?

Presenter - Patrick Oliver, Chief of Police (Retired)

Patrick Oliver serves as Director of the Criminal Justice Program at Cedarville University in Ohio. Prior to his academic career, he served for 27 years in law enforcement, including as Chief of Police in the cities of Fairborn, Grandview Heights, and Cleveland, Ohio, and as Ranger Chief of Cleveland Metropolitan Parks. He also spent 11 years as a trooper with the Ohio State Highway Patrol.    Dr. Oliver serves as a consultant and trainer for the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police.
