Spring Foraging Walk and Talk With Russ Cohen

The Boston metropolitan area is home to over 100 species of edible wild plants, some of which are more nutritious and flavorful than their cultivated counterparts. Join Russ Cohen, expert forager and author of Wild Plants I Have Known... and Eaten, for a brief introduction to wild edibles and safe and responsible foraging. Russ will present information on different species, those well known and lesser known. Learn identification tips, seasons of availability, and preparation tips. Weather permitting, his presentation will be followed by a walk around Elm Bank to look for live specimens of edible wild plants.

Russ Cohen is a professional environmentalist and wild foods enthusiast. He grew up in Weston, where he spent much of his free time in the woods, thereby cultivating a strong spiritual connection to nature. Russ' first formal exposure to edible wild plants occurred while a sophomore at Weston High School, where he enrolled in an "Edible Botany" mini-course. This sparked his passion, and he quickly learned over 50 more species, and taught that Edible Botany course his senior year.

He has continued his passionate work, leading foraging walks and talks for more than four decades. He has led classes for Mass Audubon, the New England Wild Flower Society, the Trustees of Reservations, and the Ecological Landscaping Association, teaching throughout New England. During the "off-season," Russ writes articles and gives presentations. His book, Wild Plants I Have Known... and Eaten, came out in 2004 and is now in its sixth printing.
