ISC Directors Training Program - Session 6  (PBL) Problem-based Learning

Problem-based learning is a learner-centered, case-based teaching format that has been used in medical education for decades.  During the first session of each case, students work as a group through a case, identifying what they know and what they need to learn to fully understand the case.  The students then spend time outside of class researching the learning issues that they identified.  Then in the second session the students teach each other the learning issues.  Each group has a facilitator who is a process expert in problem-based learning, but the facilitator does not provide direct teaching.  Last year this format, which in VUMC we call Case-based Learning (CBL), became a cornerstone of the multimodal approach to teaching first-year medical students during the FMK Phase in Curriculum 2.0.  In this workshop participants will participate in an abbreviated CBL experience, then discuss the CBL process and how it cab be utilized during the Immersion Phase.
