Nature Day Camp CamoDon't spend your summer indoors! Unplug and play with us as we explore our Valley's wild spaces.

Discover how much fun it is to be outside and learning about the creatures who call Yakima home!

The Yakima Area Arboretum is committed to offering first rate environmental education to our Nature Day Campers.  We believe that facilitating positive outdoor experiences while developing an understanding of local ecology can yield a powerful and lasting educational experience that helps create more informed, sensitive, and thoughtful citizens.  We strive to provide a collaborative learning environment that blends the arts, sciences, and playfulness, that actively engages the hearts, hands, and minds of our students.

Though camps share a common set of core experiences, day-to-day activities during any individual week depends largely on the interests and desires of the instructors, students, and whatever Mother Nature happens to put in our path; we feel our program excels at taking advantage of educational and recreational opportunities as they present themselves and we take pride in our flexibility.

Camp tuition includes a t-shirt and twice daily snacks.  Campers should come prepared each day with:

  • Sunscreen already applied
  • Backpack
  • Lunch
  • Water bottle
  • Durable clothes and shoes that can get wet and dirty

Dogwoods: ages 6 & 7

Sharpen your detective skills as we search for nests, bones, scat and other clues to find out what Yakima’s wild animals are up to!  Learn how to find and follow animal tracks, walk like a fox and hear like a deer!  There are mysteries from the tops of the trees to below the ground and all around!  Discover what animals need to live.  Learn nature survival skills or practice building your own habitat fort!

Camp Weeks:

  1. 7/27 - 7/31 - FULL
  2. 8/10 - 8/14 - FULL

Cottonwoods: ages 8 & 9

Explore the relationship between the valley’s living community and one of our planet’s most precious and limited resources: water.  Discover how our wet planet is able to support the plants that give us food, clean our air and water, and inspire us.  Discover where our water comes from, how it got here, where it’s going, and how we can protect it.  Be ready to catch river critters and get WET!

Camp Weeks:

  1. 8/3 - 8/7 - FULL
Because our Cottonwood camps filled up so quickly, we will allow 8 & 9 year olds in the Ponderosa camps. Contact the Arboretum for more details (509) 248-7337.

Ponderosas: ages 10, 11 & 12

Have fun in the outdoors while developing an appreciation for the survival tactics of local plants and animals.  Learn how to use a map and compass, and how to stay cool in our desert environment.  Take this opportunity to develop leadership and teamwork skills.  Get ready for fun and educational team challenges!
