Join us for our 2015 symposium

Turning Southern Style XXI

This event took place on September 18-20, 2015 and we had a wonderful time.

Since the AAW is holding its 2016 symposium in Atlanta, we will not be having the Turning Southern Style Synposium during 2016.  We will return in 2017.

The Georgia Association of Woodturners (GAW) presents its annual symposium "Turning Southern Style XXI".  This year's event will again be held at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center in Dalton, GA.  With our impressive slate of demonstrators, a large group of Vendors, and a great facility, this promises to be the largest, most informative and enjoyable symposium in our 21 year history.

Spouse / Guest Lounge

We are reserving a seating area at the Convention Center where spouses or guests can relax and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea.   Feel free to bring a favorite pastry or snack to share with others.  We will have a few tables where you can work at your favorite hobby. Registration is not required to use this informal area, so it's a great place to pass the time if you're not going to the demos.

                                         Instant Gallery

Turning Southern Style Instant Gallery

Always a favorite, the instant gallery will be on display throughout the symposium. This large exhibit of woodturned art provides a unique opportunity for collectors to become acquainted with both new and well-known artists.  Many works will be available for sale.  For "Turners", the gallery is a great way to see what others have been up to.  We invite each participant to display up to four pieces of his/her work for all to enjoy.  A $100 cash prize will be awarded to the People's Choice.

Beads of Courage

Please consider making a box whch will be donated to Beads of Courage, a non-profit organization that provides innovative, arts-in-medicine supportive care programs to transform the treatment experience for children coping with a serious illness.  This Beads of Courage link provides more information about the program, as well as the box specifications.  Symposium attendees will be given one ticket for each box they bring and five randomly drawn winners will be reimbursed for up to $50 spent at any of the vendors at the symposium.  (Bringing multiple boxes improves your chances of winning but you can only                                      win once.)

                                        Fundamental Skills Hands-On Area

If you have turning related questions, please bring them to the symposium.  We will have a mini-lathe and skilled turners available to provide one-on-one answers to your questions.  Please see the Fundamental Skills Area Rotation Schedule below.

4th Demonstration Room Dedicated to Tool Vendors

This is your chance to watch respected woodturning tool makers and suppliers as they each work with their own products for a full 90 minute demonstration and explain the reasoning behind their design. You can see the tools in use before you decide which to buy.

                                                              Shopping

For those of us who need "just one more tool" or some special pieces of wood, our Vendor Area will be stocked with tools, related equipment, supplies and beautiful wood during the entire show.

                                                                Banquet

A delicious banquet dinner will be served Saturday evening.  The price of the Banquet is included in your registration fee.  Additional Banquet seating may also be ordered for spouses and/or friends not attending the symposium demonstrations.

                                                                 Auction

With our long-time friend and Auctioneer, Tim Ryan, you are assured an enjoyable, laugh-filled, evening.  Our auction will include donations of turned pieces, tools, supplies and wood donated by our attendees, our Vendors and GAW members.  All proceeds from the auction support continuing education in woodturning through the GAW scholarship program.  Each turner coming to the symposium is encouraged to donate a turned piece (or anything you choose) to the auction to support our scholarship fund.

Location Northwest GA Convention Center

The Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center  is a terrific facility.  It allows us to offer four large, sound-controlled demonstration rooms with plenty of seating. The Trade Center also has plenty of free parking!
