The Between the Waters Bike Tour promises water views on both sides of the Delmarva peninsula through the gracious hospitality of private homeowners who have allowed CBES to use their properties for rest stops along the route.  Each rest stop will have liquids, light snacks, and a toilet.  Stops will be open on a published schedule found on your cue sheet.  If you reach a stop before or after its scheduled operating time, service may not be available.  Lunch will be available on each route.

The topography on the Shore is very flat--NO hills--with the highest point at only 42 feet.  All public roads are paved but a good bit of the mileage is asphault and the remaining mileage (60+%) is tar and chip.  The asphault rolls very smoothly, but the tar and chips rolls a bit more roughly.  The roads are very rural with little traffic as we do not usually ride on US Rte. 13.  This year ONLY, the 60 and 100 mile routes will utilize the paved shoulder of  US Rte. 13 for about 2 miles.

SAG

Professional service from Salisbury Cycle & Fitness will be available at the start/finish area and at the lunch stop.  Several marked vehicles will be riding the routes and available all day to assist riders.  Most rest stops can contact them.

  • Police and Rescue Squads are aware of the Tour and its routes.
  • If you have a medical or police emergency, call 911 as soon as you can from a cell phone or other nearby phone.
  • If you need service or other assistance from the Tour, contact host personnel at any stop.

Fall is a fabulous time to explore the secrets of Virginia's Eastern Shore. This year the 23rd Annual Between the Waters Bike Tour begins in the historic, bayfront town of Cape Charles on the southern tip of the Delmarva Pennisula.  Brought to you by the non-profit Citizens for a Better Eastern Shore (CBES), the route is designed for your cycling pleasure, immersing you in the natural and cultural heritage of  this rural coastal retreat. The easy, flat terrain winds through Victorian towns and villages on county roads lined with snow-white cotton fields, to scenic rest stops that overlook the Atlantic seaside and the Chesapeake Bay. With little vehicular traffic, this peaceful setting provides a relaxed tour for you and your biking friends.

HAVE FUN, FEEL GOOD: You are helping to raise needed funds to protect this rare coastal gem!

The Between the Waters Bike Tour is CBES major fundraiser and a successful ecotourism event that supports local businesses.  Never been to our shores? Take a sneak peak.

DIRECTIONS TO CAPE CHARLES & PARKING:  Cape Charles is located off of US Rte. 13 approximately 10 miles north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel [that connects our pennisula to Virginia Beach/Norfolk] and 70 miles south of the Virginia/Maryland state line.  Turn onto State Route 184, go 2 miles to the town, turn left onto Fig Street and bear right onto Mason.  Watch for the attendants in the 200 Block of Mason Avenue for parking instructions.

PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON THE RESIDENTIAL STREETS but use the approved parking areas.

Parking will be allowed on Bay Avenue and in the parallel parking spaces on Mason Avenue.  Attendants will be in the 200 block of Mason Avenue to assist and for parking into private lots when the public lots are full.

Cape Charle is a small 8 x 8 block town.  Parking attendants will direct you to the start location [which will be announced by end of summer] from the parking areas as we can't have parking at the check-in. We appreciate your cooperation as we all want to be invited back!

AFTER YOU PARK:  Go to the start/finish registration area at 500 Tazewell Avenue.  This is at the corner of Tazewell and Plum Streets.

DO NOT TRY TO PARK AT THIS LOCATION!!!

Authentic EASTERN SHORE OYSTER ROAST

SOLD OUT. Want to be put on waiting list? Email: info@cbes.org

Information to ticket holders coming SOON!!

$40 per person

Historic Cherry Grove Farm, Eastville, VA

On Saturday evening after the ride is the  popular CBES Between the Waters Bike Tour Oyster Roast.  Follow a country road to our idyllic setting where a warm open fire awaits. Under the stars your oysters will be roasted here and served up inside the century-old barn on long wooden tables as is the custom of a good old Shore oyster roast. Foot stoopin' blue grass music and laughter nearly lift up the rafters.

At 6 p.m. the social hour begins with appetizers, followed by a variety of "Fixins" leading up to "Oyster Madness"-- all plucked fresh from local waters-oysters you can eat.  Desserts by 8 p.m. and it's a sweet good night by 8:30 p.m.

A limited amount of beer and wine is available--after all we can't send out guests out on the road tipsy--and soft drinks.  And, oh, yes, for the oyster squeamish, we have fried chicken and coleslaw--but really, if you don't like oysters, uhm....

Bring your oyster knives (we have a few available) and a glove and plan to arrive by 6:00 and 6:30 so you don't miss a second of the fun.
