Daily Outline (Summary)

The Positive Behavior Support Training Curriculum

Dennis H. Reid, Ph.D., BCBA

Training Dates: Monday, April 27, 2015, through Friday, May 1, 2015 (total 5 days of training).

Training Summary:

Days 1 and 2 (Monday and Tuesday): Presentation of selected modules of the Positive Behavior Support Training Curriculum (PBSTC) by instructors to familiarize trainees with the content of the PBSTC (i.e., what they will eventually train to staff). The training modules to be presented include the values and goals of Positive Behavior Support (PBS), how PBS is person-centered, defining valued and challenging behavior among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, how behavior is supported or maintained by positive and negative reinforcement, understanding why behavior occurs using an antecedent-behavior-consequence model, identifying functional and meaningful skills to promote in lieu of challenging behavior, understanding the function of challenging behavior from an individual consumer perspective, different ways to provide choices based on individual verbal skills, dignified and age-appropriate means of interacting with individuals, practical yet evidence-based teaching strategies for developing consumer skills and behaviors that replace the need for challenging behavior, and key components to expect within behavior support plans.

Day 3 (Wednesday): Continuation of Days 1 and 2 focusing on using objective data in identifying and evaluating means of promoting desired skill development as well as preventing and reducing challenging behavior, and specific supervisor skills for promoting PBS practices among support staff (first half of day); Training how to use the PBSTC; assignment of PBSTC training modules that trainees will practice training on Day 4 or 5; assistance provided to trainees for preparing for their subsequent training on Day 4 or 5 (second half of day).

Day 4 (Thursday): Approximately one-half of trainees practice training a PBSTC training module to the instructors and other trainees with instructor coaching and feedback.

Day 5 (Friday): Repeat of Day 4 with remaining trainees.
