Lunch Seminar - Analysis of Existing Pavement

Wednesday March 4, 2015 John Weber, with Federal Engineering and Testing will present on the Analysis of Existing Pavement.

Outline:

A. Introduction

B. Property Managers decision making

  • Common Practice of lowest price
  • Contractors, maintenance personnel and lack of specifications
  • Contractors bidding VS engineering standards
  • Covering underlying problems that can resurface later at an increased cost
  • lssues that miqht not be clear to pavinq contractor
C. ADA
  • City requirements for safety issues
  • Signage and striping
  • Slopes
  • Pavement design
  • Ramp rails

D. Designs: Pavement begins with an engineer’s design

  • Initial pavement and drainage design by a Professional Civil Engineer
  • Expertise of the civil engineer can't be compared to a contractor
  • Engineers will design pavements based on applicable codes for the needs of the
  • parking lot and traffic design not based on temporary, but long term usage
  • A civil engineers who works on restoration of older pavements will recover the
  • standards of the original design engineer and include new code changes
  • Signage, markings, and ADA will be in compliance

E. Design Period

  • AASHTO's definition

F. Functions of a surface treatment

  • Versatile and widely used preventative maintenance techniques that are applied to the entire surface treatment
  • Prevent surface water from penetrating base material of old pavements that have cracks or weathered areas
  • To fill small voids and cracks and bond some loose aggregate particles in the pavement surface
  • Give new life to oxidize surface and restore resistance to traffic, worn pavement in which the surface aggregate appears polished

G. Permits are standard surface treatment and repair

  • Current standards for permit doesn't require specifications, product approval or application rate etc.
  • Problems associated with this procedure being harmful

H. Surface Treatments

l. Components of an asphalt pavement

J. What is an asphalt assessment and whv is it needed?

  • Field sampling and testing is important to the engineer
  • Determine causes of failure and solutions based on existing conditions
  • Provides information for correct procedures for repair

K. Findings provide information for maintenance

  • Pavement sweeping
  • Drain cleaning
  • Root pruning by an arborist
  • Annual site inspection by an engineer
  • Identify potential problem
  • Enact any ADA code changes
