Application of CBCT In The Dental Office

Cone Beam CT is a relatively new addition to the dental practice that has taken off with exponential growth. CBCTsystems are designed to allow for high resolution imaging of the hard tissues of the maxillofacial region. CBCT allowsfor short scanning times and radiation doses significantly less than traditional scanning techniques. The availability ofthis technology in the dental practice provides the dental practitioner with an imaging modality capable of providinga 3-D orthogonal representation of the maxillofacial region with no distortion. With the explosive growth of third partyDICOM software applications, we are able to provide improved treatment for our patients with greater predictability andefficiency. This seminar will review cone beam technology and how it differs from traditional scanning technology. Also,a quick review of some 3rd party software applications with a focus on Nobel Biocare’s “Nobel-Guide” and Materialise’sSimPlant systems will be presented. Case studies for all specialties will be presented.

As an experienced Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist, Dr. Kottal has extensive knowledge in both the radiologyand 3D imaging fields, with a specialized focus on cone beam CT imaging technology. Trained at the University of Missouri-KansasCity, Dr. Kottal now serves as the Director of 3D Imaging at Carestream Dental. His most recent appointment included acting as ClinicalAssistant Professor at the NYU School of Dentistry and serving as the head of a specialty group of oral and maxillofacial radiologists.In his roles, Dr. Kottal has been asked to speak extensively on various aspects of clinical radiology in national and international venuesand has served as a keynote speaker on numerous occasions. Dr. Kottal remains on the cutting-edge of technology by maintainingactive clinical research involving radiology and 3D Imaging.
