A Leaders in Change for Sustainability Program
As follow-on to our recent Learning From Successful Pollution Prevention Programs event, we are hosting a TRILEMMA Game Night on March 12th featuring a role-playing game which we developed in partnership with Dr. Curt Gervich of SUNY Plattsburgh.
Having played this engaging and eco-educational game with a wide variety of people, we believe the conversations it generates will be productive and impactful.
About TRILEMMA:
Inside TRILEMMA is a System Dynamics model of a refinery based on US EPA TRI data. The game plays out the dynamics between three teams that represent common stakeholders in sustainability conflicts: industry, environmental and human health activists/NGOs, and government regulators. Each team is given their guiding principles - their values, concerns, positions and rewards. Each team has a set of decisions to make, the company team around profits, the activists around benefits to society and regulators enforce rules. Their decisions are fed into the model which then simulates the outcomes of the teams' decisions.
After the teams make their annual decisions, they receive feedback about how their group is faring. Nearly every decision a team makes has cascading effects throughout the system and has consequences for other teams. How teams interact - whether they take collaborative or competitive approaches, how they negotiate, and the ways they go about managing conflict determines the overall outcome to the system as a whole.
