New Camino: Reimagining Latino/Hispanic Ministry in the Diocese of Southern Virginia in the 21st Century

Did You Know…  The first and/or dominant language for many of our Latin@s/Hispanic neighbors is English?**

Many church leaders (both clergy & lay) are interested in growing with and being responsive to their Latino/a neighbors.  They think it is impossible because they don’t speak Spanish.

Come to the New Camino Seminar.

Led by The Rev. Anthony Guillen, Episcopal Church Officer for Latin@/Hispanic Ministries, and practitioners from across the country, this seminar explores the changing face, cultural backgrounds, interests and needs of Latino/a communities, and how we can welcome, serve and involve these communities in our Congregational Life and Ministry.

Come learn how Latin@/Hispanic Ministry has changed from old bifurcated Spanish only / English only model.

Clergy, vestry, and lay leaders who want a growing and vital church will join us at New Camino.

We encourage teams of at least 3 people from each congregation.

Conference is a joint effort of The Diocese of Southern Virginia, Convocation 7, and the Episcopal Church Center.

Contact: The Rev. Canon Jeunée Godsey, Canon for Congregational Development, jgodsey@gmail.com

* What’s the difference between Hispanic verses Latino?

Hispanic refers to language. Latino refers to geography. Basically, you are Hispanic if you and/or your ancestry come from a country where they speak Spanish. You are Latino if you and/or your ancestry come from a Latin American country.

Hispanic excludes the nearly 200 million Brazilians who, while accurately labelled Latinos, speak Portuguese. They are Latinos, they are not Hispanic.Hispanic includes the nearly 50 million Spaniards (population of Spain) who could never be called Latinos. Someone from Mexico would be both Hispanic and Latino.  (from http://hispanichouston.com/2013/08/07/hispanic-vs-latino-whats-the-difference/)

** “Latin@” is a shortcut for Latino (masculine) and Latina (feminine)

*** New Generation Latinos (NGLs): “The Episcopal Church’s Strategic Vision for Reaching Latinos/Hispanics” calls the Episcopal Church to be intentional about church planting and programming focusing on second and third generation Latinos. A rapidly growing group, NGLs represents about 62% of the U.S. Latino population, which accounts for nearly 30 million NGLs. “This group is between 14 and 34 years of age,” explained the Rev. Canon Anthony Guillén, Missioner for Latino/Hispanic Ministries. “They are bilingual, bicultural, U.S. born, or came to the U.S. as children. They maintain their parent’s family values, faith and religious traditions. NGLs should be considered the mission field for the Episcopal Church.”
