"Trans 101: What a mental health professional needs to know"

Course Abstract:

This interactive in-service training will give participants the background and terminology needed to work with gender creative clients. The differences between biological gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity will be clarified. 

Course Objectives:

1. Teach appropriate terminology to enable the discussion of issues involving trans gender clients and their common concerns.
   
2. Review historical mental health perspectives regarding transgenderism.
3. Explain DSM-V diagnosis criteria and two treatment models.
4. Identify common co-occurring conditions.
5. Establish how to be a trans ally in order to create a therapeutic alliance.
6. Review the current cultural and legal standing of the trans community.
