During The Coming Out Process"

Course Abstract:

As LGBT adolescents come to terms with their own sexuality their families are also experiencing their own coming out process. During this vulnerable time it is vital to create a system of support within the family dynamic. In this highly interactive workshop participants will explore the coming out process and it’s influence on family systems, learn compassionate language styles, the family grieving process, and address cultural and socio-economic factors that can influence the coming out process and family dynamics.

Course Objectives:

1. Build awareness of the effect of coming out process on family systems.
2. Utilize the Klein Sexual Orientation Grid to develop effective treatment plans and strategies for working with the LGBT teens and their families.
3. Assess the effects of community and family based hetero-centric systems and biases within the family unit on LGBT youth.
4. Analyze developmental models of sexuality and how they influence the challenges of the coming out process and it’s effect on the family.
5. Apply therapeutic concepts developed during the workshop to the clinical setting with respect to family dynamics as well as cultural and social constructs.
