 3rd Annual
 Day of Volunteering


The day will begin with 8:00am Mass, sending all volunteers onward with a blessing.  Project leaders will meet volunteers at the AMC parking lot at 8:30am.


Habitat for Humanity - Home Restoration (limited to 40)
Age restriction: 16 and older

8:00am - 3:00pm (group can plan to attend Saturday 5pm Mass after the build)
Volunteers will work on an existing home in need of repair (will likely be in Lynwood or Long Beach). Activities include using power tools, sledge hammers (for demolition), being on ladders for roofing, possible painting and gardening.
Sandwiches and drinks will be provided, unless special lunch desired (then bring own). 

Senior Home Visit  (limited to 20)   All ages welcome!

8:30am - ??
The Respect Life Ministry will lead a group to the Sunrise Assisted Living Center in Hermosa Beach to visit residents, read to them, play cards, participate in various activities. Young children need supervision by parents or guardians 

M.O.M.'s Book Drive for Literacy Center St. Lawrence of Brindisi  

8:00am - 10:30am
Mother’s Outreach Ministry and {pages} a bookstore will sponsor a book drive to support the St. Lawrence Literacy Center.
Look for our booth outside O’Donnell Hall to purchase a book(s) for the Literacy Center, and to customize a bookmark to accompany your donated book(s).

Hearts for the Hungry, St. Lawrence of Brindisi   All ages welcome!

8:30 - 9:00am for lunch making
Volunteers will meet in the SS. Brigid & Brendan Room to make sandwiches and assemble lunch bags (chips, fruit, etc.)
Optional: Help deliver lunches (+ toiletries) to St. Lawrence of Brindisi in Watts.

Covenant House
Age restriction: 25 and older can participate. Liability waiver to be signed.

8:30am meet in parking lot to carpool 
The Respect Life ministry will lead a group to the Covenant House of California
(1325 N. Western Ave. L.A.) that assists homeless youths.
Projects are: building planter boxes (5 volunteers - bring gloves, hats, sunscreen and be prepared to work with soil); bake cookies (3 volunteers); organize clothing closets (5 volunteers). 

Other ways to participate: bring donations to the Church Parking Lot before the team leaves at 8:30am - new mens and womens socks, new mens underwear, new pillows and pillowcases 

Heal the Bay Beach Cleanup  An all-age, family project.

9:00am - 11:00am 
Volunteers meet at the foot of Manhattan Beach pier by the bike path/lifeguard tower. Guest speaker is scheduled to appear at 9:00am.
Waivers will be distributed and filled out before the clean-up. Gloves and bags will be supplied.  but bring own sunscreen and water. 

St. Vincent de Paul Bundle "Saturday"

8:30am - 1:00pm
The "Bundle" truck will be he St. V de Paul re to collect your useable clothing and useable household items. They are also in great need of furniture and large appliances. Call them for home pick-up of these heavy items, 323-224-6280 or 800-97-HELP-1.

 

Downtown Women's Center - B&B Room  All ages welcome  

9 to 9:30 a.m.  We will be putting together snack bags in the B&B room that will be taken to the Downtown Women’s Center (442 S. San Pedro Street, L.A. 90013). We could also use help with donations of toiletries, purses, backpacks and women’s clothing that will be donated to this shelter.

Hearts for the Hungry - Santa Monica OPCC

7:15am meet to carpool to Santa Monica
Volunteers will collect mens/womens clothing and white socks, and small hotel-sized toiletries that will be distributed to the homeless in Santa Monica.
Optional: Stay longer and help with the Meals on Wheels program that seres lunchese starting at 10:00am

Pet Adoption and Foster Care

This project involves three groups that are dedicated to finding homes for dogs and cats.

The Lovejoy Foundation (www.lovejoyfoundation.net) can use up to 25 volunteers to help them throughout the day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with pet adoption at the Global Pet Foods Outlet (401 S. Pacific Coast Highway in Redondo Beach, 310-350-0980). Volunteers can meet at the church parking lot after 8 am. Mass for instructions and some transportation will be available. They could also use some creative help with making signs that promote their adoption services. The group will provide all materials.

The Rover Rescue organization (www.roverrescue.com) will be on the American Martyrs campus with information about their pet adoptions and pet foster care. They can use six people to help with information distribution and cleaning up during their visit.

The PURRfect Partners organization of Torrance (purrfectpartners4cats.com) will also be on campus with information on cat and kitten adoption and foster care home opporutunities.

Ten Thousand Villages

10:00am - 6:00pm - Come to the store (1907 S. Catalina Ave., in the Riviera Village area of Redondo Beach) to learn more about how the store’s mission to help artisans in developing countries through fair trade, and find out more about volunteering on a regular basis.

Shop all day on Saturday, March 28 – 15 percent of sales by AMC shoppers will be donated back to the church through the Matthew 25 Ministry. There is also volunteer training taking place on Friday, March 27, from 9-10 a.m. at the store.
