Police Resource Analysis, Deployment and Scheduling

In these economic times much attention has been given to police recruitment, retention, and how to maintain police budgets and existing staffing positions. Less has centered on adequately assessing the demand for police service and alternative ways of managing that demand. Staffing police departments is a continuous challenge and one that has become more complex in recent years. Police Resource Management will address the foundational methods for justifying necessary staffing levels based on various workload drivers; the methodical processes to aid in placing the right amount of officers, in the right place, at the right time; and current police work schedules to include their advantages, disadvantages, and fundamental traits. This workshop will provide law enforcement managers with the tools and resources for assessing their agency’s staffing levels to efficiently and effectively meet their community needs.

This seminar is taught in an interactive workshop style. Each participant is requested to bring a laptop computer equipped with Microsoft Excel and an external mouse. Over the course of four days, the participant will build an integrated Excel workbook containing all of the necessary mathematical formulas to conduct a resource allocation study at their agency.  A thorough explanation of each step in the allocation process is provided by the instructor using a PowerPoint presentation that coordinates with the participant’s handbook. After discussing the underlying theory for each formula, the participant is guided through the process of building the formulas into their spreadsheets.

At the conclusion of the workshop, the student will leave with their completed handbook, a completed Excel spreadsheet, and a better understanding of the task that lies before them.

*Registration is limited to one person per agency*
