Sondra Shaw-Hardy, J.D., has been described as “the pioneer” in women’s philanthropy. An advancement officer for over 25 years, she has authored, coauthored, or coedited six books since 1995. She has founded or cofounded numerous nonprofit groups and, with Martha Taylor, cofounded the Women’s Philanthropy Institute, now a program of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. After forming one of the first giving circles in the nation in 1999 in Traverse City, Michigan called “Three Generations Circle of Women Givers,” Sondra’s dream was that every city in the United States would have a women’s giving circle. These giving circles now number in the hundreds, and Sondra has helped initiate scores of them. She has been called “the mother of giving circles.”
