Sondra Shaw-Hardy, J.D., has been described as “the pioneer” in women’s philanthropy. An advancement officer for over 25 years, she has authored, coauthored, or coedited six books since 1995. She has founded or cofounded numerous nonprofit groups and, with Martha Taylor, cofounded the Women’s Philanthropy Institute, now a program of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. After forming one of the first giving circles in the nation in 1999 in Traverse City, Michigan called “Three Generations Circle of Women Givers,” Sondra’s dream was that every city in the United States would have a women’s giving circle.  These giving circles now number in the hundreds, and Sondra has helped initiate scores of them. She has been called “the mother of giving circles.”

About WIP

Women in Philanthropy at EMU cultivates faculty, staff, alumnae and friends as University supporters through:

  • Strenghtening ties between women and EMU
  • Educating women about the power of personal and collective philanthropy
  • Increasing gifts by women to EMU
  • Distributing financial awards to members of the EMU community. WIP has awarded over $250,000 in grants to EMU programs, initiatives and research projects in the last 5 years.

Members of the group make a collective and powerful difference by joining their gift with others to make annual awards to students, faculty, staff and alumni in the EMU community.
