Best Practices in Critical Incident Response 

This program covers trends in the nature and frequency of critical incidents in the workplace, how to incorporate psychological first aid principles in response to organizations, individuals, and workgroups, how to organize response to incidents in the workplace with an EAP focus, exercising cultural competency in the context of response to mass disasters, and how to promote resilience and self-care. Participants will receive a certificate in Critical Incident Response from Crisis Care Network, 6 CEUs and 6 PDHs. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Demonstrate how to deliver critical incident response services with understanding of corporate culture, business objectives, and risk management features.
  • Demonstrate how to conduct on site critical incident response services including management consultation, small and large group briefings, and 1:1 supportive interactions for employees.
  • Practice CIR services that support individual and organizational resilience in functional terms such as return to work and productivity.
  • Practice psycho-education applicable to the immediate aftermath of a critical incident.
  • Demonstrate how to effectively apply Psychological First Aid (PFA) principles in an organizational setting.
  • Demonstrate how to work within 3rd party relationships and with multiple stakeholders.
  • Exercise cultural competence in the delivery of critical incident response.
  • Identify ethical/legal/confidentiality standards applicable to critical incident response.
  • Recognize a phase-sensitive response to mass disasters
  • Promote self-care for CIR responders

Jeff Gorter, MSW, LMSW, Vice President, EAP/Corporate Relations, Crisis Care Network 

 Mr. Gorter brings over 28 years of clinical experience including consultation and extensive on-site critical incident response to businesses and communities. He has responded directly to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina, the Virginia Tech shootings, the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill, the earthquake/tsunami in Japan, and the Newtown Tragedy.  He has conducted trainings and presented at the APA Annual Conference, the World Conference on Disaster Management, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies Annual Meeting, Employee Assistance Professionals Association (EAPA) Annual World Conference and at other state and national venues on a variety of topics.
