Home Health Aide Training and Employment Program 

1199SEIU Home Care Education Fund is delivering an advanced English as a Second Language (ESL) course, contextualized for the home care industry and employment as a home health aide (HHA), as a bridge to home health aide (HHA) training.

Recruitment and Training Process;

  1. Information session/pre-screening
  2. ESL pre-test & employer interview
  3. Background & reference checks
  4. ESL bridge: 4 weeks (3.5 hrs a day Monday - Friday)
  5. HHA training: Three and a half weeks of full time (Monday - Friday, 8:45AM to 5:00PM) training. 
  6. Employment as HHA: Be prepared to start working upon completion of HHA training. 

Who is right for this training?

  • Meets all the requirements and qualifications for home health aide training
  • Speaks Spanish (or another language) AND intermediate level English

What are the benefits of the ESL bridge for candidates?

  • Free advanced home care specific English class that transitions directly into HHA training and employment
  • Weekly metro-cards provided for ESL bridge portion (NOT for HHA training though)

About Home Health Aides

The Home Health Aide is a trained worker qualified to carry out health care tasks, assist with personal hygiene, housekeeping, and other related supportive tasks to a patient with health care needs in his/her home under the supervision of a registered professional nurse or licensed physical therapist.  

Position Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be physically fit with the ability to carry a minimum of 10 lbs and lift a minimum of 30 lbs
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to work Mon-Fri & every other weekend.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Reliable, energetic, self motivated and well-organized
  • Required to complete a criminal history and drug test 
  • Must possess two (2) personal references & be able to complete a 5 year employer verification check
