Sensory Integration and Mental Health: Self-Regulation in Children

Presented by:
Silke Plesch, MA, LMHC

Monday, April 13, 2015
12:00pm - 1:30pm EST

Webinars are online presentations geared towards professionals. Participants who call in live have the opportunity to participate in a question/answer session with the speaker. All registrants, regardless of live attendance, receive a download of the recorded webinar following the presentation.

This webinar will explore self-regulation in children by means of relating sensory information and mental health issues. Children who struggle with integrating sensory information often show atypical physical, mental and social functions. This presentation will explore theoretical understanding of sensory and mental health issues, explain the evolutionary and neurological aspects of brain development in children, and discuss why such knowledge is crucial for understanding children with atypical behavior. This presentation will also demonstrate that using sensory interventions is a very effective tool to alleviate associated mental health issues.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the origins of sensory integration and how it might be revealed as mental health behavioral issues in children.
  2. Recognize how to use evolutionary and neurological aspects of brain development to guide treatment.
  3. List ways sensory processing can be used to help a child self-regulate more effectively.

About the Speaker: Silke Plesch, MA, LMHC is a licensed mental health counselor who specializes in families and individuals who have experienced trauma.  She is trained in solution-focused, sensorimotor approaches, and attachment issues.
