PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Board Building Cycle: Nine Steps to Finding, Recruiting, and Engaging Nonprofit Board Members

One of the most important responsibilities of a board is to ensure that it continuously adds qualified new members and keeps them engaged. Board building should not just happen when it is time to fill a vacancy; it should be an ongoing process with year-round activities.

This workshop will guide you through a process that includes identifying, cultivating, and recruiting members; orienting new board members; encouraging active participation and commitment; educating the board; rotating board members; and engaging in self-assessment.  BoardSource's Building Cycle is an interactive board course that focuses on the different steps in the process of building an effective board.

PRESENTER:

Vanessa Womack Easter has a diverse background in training and development, career transition coaching, higher education instruction, human resources, nonprofit, small business and leadership development.  In her position at the Virginia Community Healthcare Association, also known as the Virginia Primary Care Association (VPCA), she coordinates and develops training; manages logistics for the Association's many local and state events for its Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers, and liaise with center CEO/EDs regarding adherence to Section 330 of the Public Health Service Act and grant funding requirements.  Since 2008 she has been a lead faculty area chair in the School of Business for the University of Phoenix - Richmond - Virginia Beach Campus in the content area of Strategic Analysis and Planning.  Vanessa performs facilitation and traning/development functions locally and nationally.

Before accepting a full time position with the VPCA in 2013, she successfully worked for nearly 20 years as a solopreneur and consultant.  Vanessa's community engagement and leadership roles included being president of the board of directors for Virginia Heroes Incorporated (a middle school mentoring program founded by Arthur Ashe) and a former advisory council memeber for the Virginia Commonwealth University - Grace E. Harris Leadership Institue Minority Political Leadership Institute and Initiatives of Change/Hope in the Cities.  She is a graduate of Leadership Metro Richmond (LQ 2006) in Richmond, Virginia.  She has facilitated community dialogue through Initiatives of Change/Hope in the Cities' presentation, Unpacking 2010 Census: The Realities of Race, Class and Jurisdiction.

Vanessa is a co-author with other international women's voices in the recent published 'The Female CEO: Pearls, Power & Passion' (August 2014) and the author of 'Paint the Sky Purple' (2010).  She hosted conversations on her former radio show 'On Track with Vanessa Womack' which also has videos posted on YouTube.
