Management-Intensive Grazing Workshop
led by Jim Gerrish

This stimulating two-day grazing workshop at Swift Level is led by
Jim Gerrish, the leading expert in the study and practice of
Management-Intensive Grazing (MiG).

The course will feature both classroom and field sessions covering the basics of MiG from understanding when to begin grazing to designing and developing your grazing cell.

With over 30 years of hands-on practical grazing management in commercial cattle and sheep production, as well as a long research career at the University of Missouri, Jim provides a unique perspective on bringing the art and science of grazing management together in a coherent package.

Classroom and Field Sessions - Days 1 & 2: Swift Level

Workshop & Lecture - Day 2 @ 7 p.m.: WVU Building at WV State Fairgrounds

The first day’s morning classroom session will lay the foundation of grazing management based on the four primary ecosystem processes of all grasslands: efficient solar energy flow, improving the water cycle on your farm, creating a dynamic soil mineral cycle, and strengthening biodiversity throughout your grazing lands.

The afternoon field session will examine these processes as we walk through the pastures and look in detail at the soil-plant-animal-human interactions.

The second day’s focus is planning and installing a grazing cell that will help you understand the economics to strengthen your financial operating perspective on your farm or ranch. The classroom sessions will take you through the planning process for both fixed and flexible grazing cell designs that will allow you to efficiently move livestock through a series of paddocks. Cost effective fence and stock water equipment will be demonstrated in the field.

Throughout the workshop, we will emphasize how financial profitability and environmental enhancement can be achieved simultaneously while also enjoying a high-quality lifestyle.’
