The Federal Deposit Insurance Corportation (FDIC) is an independent agency created by Congress to maintain stability and public confidence in the nation's financial system by:

  • Insuring deposits,
  • Examining and supervising financial institutions for safety and soundines and consumer protection, and
  • managing receiverships.

Money Smart is a comprehensive financial education curriculum designed to help low- and moderate-income individuals outsdie the financial mainstream enhance their financial skills and create positive banking relationships. Money Smart has reached over 2.75 million consumers since 2001. Reseach shows that the curriculum can positively influence how consumers manage their finances, and these changes are sustainable in the months after the training.

GUEST SPEAKER: 

LINDA GABRIEL - Community Affairs Specialist, Dallas Region

Ms. Gabriel is a Community Affairs Specialist for the Division of Depositor and Consumer Protection. Ms. Gabriel began her work with the FDIC’s Community Affairs Office as a Community Affairs Assistant in 2006.  The Community Affairs Office is a liaison between financial institutions, examiners, community organizations and the regulatory side of the FDIC in the areas of the Community Reinvestment Act and community/economic development.

Since 2006, Ms. Gabriel has been busy promoting the FDICs award winning adult financial education curriculum, Money Smart, which was recognized in the 2003 National Service America Awards. Her current projects includes, assisting banks and communities throughout Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Ms. Gabriel interacts with community-based organizations, bankers, regulatory agencies and the public to bring greater understanding and compliance with CRA, the fair lending laws, community development and financial literacy.

Ms. Gabriel is an FDIC representative to the Interagency CRA Roundtable, the Asset Building Coalition of Dallas, and the South Dallas Community Development Task Force.  She is a member of the Texas Foreclosure Prevention Task Force, and serves as an advisor to the Texas Saves program. Ms. Gabriel is an FDIC representative to Minority Serving Institutions where she provides financial education to college students.  Ms. Gabriel spent 18 years in the Division of Liquidation and Resolution.

Ms. Gabriel holds a BA Degree from the Univesity of Louisiana.
