ArtSpace Herndon logoThis competition is produced by ArtSpace Herndon, Herndon’s non-profit art center located at 750 Center Street in downtown Herndon.  ArtSpace Herndon, operated by the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts, is a gathering place to celebrate the arts, showcasing artwork and events by local, regional, and nationally known artists and performers. Exhibits in the Post Gallery change monthly and fine art classes, held in the two classrooms, are offered to the public through local artists. Handmade jewelry, pottery and Herndon themed items are available for sale in the Artisan Shop.  The facility is available to rent for private parties and business functions. The Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts was incorporated in 2003 with a mission to establish and sustain an arts center in downtown Herndon through leadership, advocacy, fund raising, programming, policy setting and operation. Reston Bike Club and ArtSpace Herndon invite all 2D artists to enter the Reston Century T-Shirt Art Competition.  All 2 dimensional media are acceptable including painting, drawing and photography and the artwork entered in the competition for this year’s event must carry a theme identifying it with Reston, VA and road cycling.

BACKGROUND: 
The Reston Bike Club sponsors a Century Bike Ride every year at the end of August.  This year is the 33rd consecutive year.  For more information on the Century Bike Ride visit the Reston Bike Club website.   This will be the sixth year ArtSpace Herndon has worked with the Reston Bike Club on the t-shirt art competition. 

Each year the T-Shirt Art Competition features a different town along the Reston Century route, such as Reston, Herndon, Ashburn, Leesburg, Hamilton, Purcellville, and Waterford.

The winning artwork will be printed in full color on the back of the shirts given out to approximately 1200 riders and displayed on the club website.  

ELIGIBILITY & MEDIA:
The artwork entered in the competition for this year’s event must carry a theme identifying it with Reston, VA and road cycling.  All art and 2 dimensional media are acceptable including painting, drawing and photography. 

Images clearly recognizable as being in Reston should be included in the artwork submitted.  This can include, but is not limited to, landmarks along the W&OD Trail through Reston. Images should also clearly depict road cycling.  This can include, but is not limited to, images of road bikes, riders, bike parts such as wheels, gears, chains etc.

Final reproduction size will be approximately 12” x 7”.  Artwork and images can be either horizontal or vertical orientation.  Please make sure your artwork and images fit these proportions.  Please submit jpg files for jurying, if possible.  Photographs will also be accepted.

Vector images for reproduction will need to be provided as a full size .eps or an Adobe Illustrator file at 600 dpi or raster artwork as a .jpg or .psd. 

RECOGNITION and SALES OPPORTUNITY:

Recognition will be given to first, second, and third places as determined by the Reston Bike Club Board in the following amounts.  Reston Bike Club will contact artists once the jury has completed its work by July 27, 2015.

  1. First Place: $500.00
  2. Second Place: $300.00
  3. Third Place:  $100.00

On the day of the Reston Century, the winning artist will be encouraged to sell prints of the winning artwork in format(s) of his/her choosing in a space under the registration pavilion at Reston Town Center.  No commission will be charged on the artist sales that day. 

EXHIBITION OPPORTUNITY:
All artists will be invited to exhibit their entries at ArtSpace Herndon.  This event will be in conjunction with the Reston Bike Club annual awards dinner in late fall and artists will be notified approximately one month in advance of the annual awards dinner with the details for exhibiting at ArtSpace. 

  • All artwork submitted for exhibition must be framed and ready to hang with D-rings or screw eyes and wire. Gallery wrap is also acceptable, as long as the edges are finished and staples are on the back.
  • The Artist is responsible for labeling the artwork with the artist’s name, the title, medium and price.
  • The Artist is responsible for insuring, delivering and picking up his/her artwork for exhibit at ArtSpace Herndon.
  • All works featured in the exhibit will be available for sale at a price of the Artist’s choosing unless marked “Not for Sale” or “NFS.”
  • Final selection of work to be displayed will be at the discretion of ArtSpace Herndon who will arrange and hang the exhibition.
  • A 25% commission will be paid to the ArtSpace Herndon for artwork sold during this exhibit. Artists may be asked to complete an IRS W-9 form depending on the price of their works.
  • Promotion of the exhibit by ArtSpace Herndon will be through its customary promotional activities and the Artist is encouraged to self-promote.  
  • Artwork displayed in and around ArtSpace will be exhibited at the artist’s own risk.

DATES:

Artwork due: July 14, 2015
Artists will be notified of winning Artwork: July 27, 2015 
Winning Artist display and sales: Sunday, August 23, 2015
Artwork exhibit of all entries: Mid-November, 2015

ENTRY:
Entries can be submitted online, by email or regular mail.  The entry fee is $15 for up to three images and may be paid using VISA or Mastercard, check, or money order made payable to “ArtSpace Herndon.”  Entry fees are non-refundable.  See instructions below.  The entry deadline is Monday, July 13, 2015.  As this is the latest possible date, the deadline will NOT be extended.

  • You will be prompted to email your images to exhibits@artspaceherndon.com with “Reston Century Entry” in the subject line.  This is a second step in the process that must be done before your registration is completed.
  • Label each Jpeg file with your name, title of the piece, medium, and size (jane_doe_herndon_cyclist_oil_11x7). Send only one image per work.  Jpeg files should be approximately 1MB in size to adequately represent the artwork  and cannot exceed 5MB for emailing purposes.
  • Entry deadline: Online entry must be completed and images emailed by 11:59pm EDT July 13, 2015.

This is not a postmark deadline.  If it is the last minute, you will need to include the credit card information requested on the emailed entry form.
