2015 Harmon Lecture

CoAIMH is pleased to honor Maya Bunik, MD at the 2015 Harmon lecture!

Practicing Primary Care Pediatrics with Integrated Mental Health: I have been changed for GOOD

Dr. Maya Bunik is an Associate Professor at University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine and medical director of primary care at Children's Hospital Colorado. In 2006 she completed a two-year Primary Care Research Fellowship that included a Master of Science in Public Health. In her role as medical director in the primary care clinic, she has worked closely with Dr. Ayelet Talmi on the development and sustainability of the CLIMB program, more specifically in quality improvement research with screening for pregnancy-related depression and developmental delay,as well as motivational interviewing for caregivers regarding second hand smoke (SHS) exposure. She has received excellent feedback on her first book, now with the second edition coming out soon, Breastfeeding Telephone Triage and Advice, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics as a helpful resource for physician practices and anyone providing advice for breastfeeding. Currently, it is being distributed to US hospitals as part of the WHO Baby Friendly Health Initiative led by NICHQ. Dr. Bunik completed a pilot for breastfeeding support that included texting and social media and is currently a primary investigator for the Bikes for Life dissemination evaluation- an obesity intervention that includes providing free bicycles to overweight children. She is so honored to recieve the Harmon Award because Project CLIMB is really the best thing that has happened to her other than her three wonderful children and husband John. She often states that in her next life she wants to be an infant mental health specialist and she will illustrate in her lecture why she has truly been "changed for good" by her work with many of you in the field.
