America's meat labeling is more complicated now than it was in 1993. The regulations that went into effect in 2009 -- even with subsequent modifcations -- altered supply chains and violated WTO rules.
Canada and Mexico have threatened over $3 billion in trade retaliation, and the WTO is set to hear their request on June 17. On June 10, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 300 to 131 to repeal the country of origin labeling requirements for beef, pork, and chicken. The question now is, will the Senate follow the lead of the House on COOL repeal? Or will it opt for a less certain course and weathr the all but inevitable retaliation?
On June 16, we will look at the history and the options for all three affected countries -- the U.S., Canada, and Mexico -- with help from these experts...
