Enhancing Child-Parent Relationships:
Why Primary Relationships Are Important
to the Child's Development

This workshop has been rescheduled for Friday, September 11.

The Tulane School of Social Work is proud to present a 3-hour social work CEU event entitled  "Enhancing Child-Parent Relationships: Why Primary Relationships Are Important to the Child¹s Development" by Dr. Erin Dugan, a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor and a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor. The event will be held on Friday, Sept. 11 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. in the fifth floor conference room at the Tulane School of Social Work located 127 Elk Place. Registration will begin at 12:30 p.m.

The purpose of this workshop is to present to professionals, the need for enhancement of the child parent relationship. This workshop will promote the use of therapeutic goals for children and parents. The overall purpose for the workshop is to provide professionals with a tool whereby parents and children can enhance and strengthen their relationships through a 10-sesison modular format.

The child parent relationship should be initially considered when professionals begin working with children and their families. By becoming aware of the child parent attachment style, the clinician enables and obtains the possibility to enhance the overall development of the child parent relationship before integrating play therapy interventions. It is the clinician¹s responsibility to ensure the child parent relationship is secure before implementing any type of therapeutic interventions. The child parent relationship is viewed as the foundation by which most children lean to relate not only to their self, but to the rest of the world (i.e., their environments in which they interact). Many behavioral and emotional disorders are influenced by an insecure attachment style between the child and the parent. The development of the child parent relationship can foster the overall development of the child¹s view of not only himself, but also himself in relation to his peers and his world.

Participants will be able to:

  • Review theoretical foundations related to conceptualizing child parent relationships;
  • Discover the influence intergenerational attachment styles have upon the development of the self and self and others when working with family systems;
  • Learn how the development of secure vs. insecure attachment styles influence the parent-child relationships;
  • Discover the impact of insecure attachment styles upon children and the development of other disorders; and
  • Discover methods and approaches used in enhancing the parent child relationship.
