Rights-of-Way as Habitat Working Group
The Energy Resources Center at the University of Illinois-Chicago is facilitating a Rights-of-Way as Habitat Working Group focused on the utility and transportation sectors in the Midwest. A number of recent federal and state conservation strategies for pollinators, including the National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators released by the White House’s Pollinator Health Task Force in May 2015, identify utility and transportation rights-of-way as key to the success of widespread pollinator habitat development. The objective of the working group is to provide a forum to share ideas, lessons learned, and other information on habitat development along rights-of-way.
The initial working group meeting will consist of a mix of informational presentations and small group break-out discussions covering a variety of topics:
- Importance of wildlife habitat in rights-of-way,
- Highlights of successful habitat projects along utility and transportation corridors,
- Best management practices for pollinator-friendly rights-of-way,
- Tips for establishing an integrated vegetation management program, and
- Opportunities for the working group going forward.
