Adaptations to TF-CBT for American Indian Children and Adolescents 

 

The New York State Children's Alliance is proud to announce the upcoming training opportunity for Mental Health Clinicians who work with American Indian children and adolescents.

This training  is being offered free of charge to attendees. 

Space is limited to the first 10 registrants!

Training Prerequisite: Participants must be skilled in the delivery of TF-CBT.


Intended Audience: 

This training is intended for mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and licensed counselors who are currently delivering Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to American Indian children and adolescents.  

Training Includes:

  • Two-day in-person clinical training on the adaptations to TF-CBT
  • 6 monthly consultation calls through implementation
 Meet the Presenters: 

Dolores Subia BigFoot, Ph.D., is trained as a child psychologist, and is an associate professor directing the Native American Programs at the Center on Child Abuse and Neglect at University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She has directed Project Making Medicine, a clinical training program for mental health clinicians working in Indian Country, since 1994 while also directing the Indian Country Child Trauma Center. It was under the guidance of Dr. BigFoot at the Indian Country Child Trauma Center that three evidenced based treatments were adapted for American Indian and Alaska Native families in titled the Honoring Children Series. Each of these EBT models incorporates American Indian and Alaska Native orientations and world views. She is a member of the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma and affiliated with the Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana in which her children are enrolled.  Dr. Bigfoot can be reached at: Dee-bigfoot@ouhsc.edu

 

Susan Schmidt, a licensed Counseling Psychologist, is an Associate Professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Center on Child Abuse and Neglect. She has expertise in design, implementation and evaluation of clinical interventions in the areas of domestic violence, child trauma, adolescent illegal sexual behavior, and child maltreatment. Susan is a member of the National Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) trainer network. She currently serves as the director of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, a funded child Trauma Services Program that provides statewide training and consultation to mental health treatment provides in evidence-based assessment and treatment interventions (including TF-CBT) for trauma exposed children and families. Dr. Schmidt co-developed the cultural enhancement of TF-CBT for American Indian and Alaska Native children and families, Honoring Children, Mending the Circle, with fellow Center on Child Abuse and Neglect faculty member, Dr. Dolores Subia BigFoot.
