FATCA: Strategies for Coping with this Complicated New Law
Joseph B. Darby III will present "FATCA: Strategies for Coping with this Complicated New Law".  Mr. Darby will provide an overview of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), which went into effect on July 1, 2014. Mr. Darby will discuss the basic mechanics and reporting obligations imposed by FATCA on U.S. taxpayers and explain the FATCA compliance burdens imposed on foreign financial institutions and on U.S. taxpayers.

 Living and Dying with an S Corporation
Joseph B. Darby III will present "Living and Dying with an S Corp". This session will help participants: understand how to operate an S Corporation with maximum tax and business efficiency; how to implement a transfer of a family S Corporation to the next or succeeding generation; recognize important techniques on how to qualify for "S" status, and then avoid a disqualifying event; and how to fix a disqualification problem without disruption.

Speaker Bios

David L. Mellem, EA & Mary R. Mellem, EA 
David and Mary prepare approximately 1,200 tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, estates, and trusts.  2015 represents David’s 37th year and Mary’s 31st year of income tax preparation.  They are the partners of Ashwaubenon Tax Professionals.

In addition to teaching tax seminars and preparing tax returns, David and Mary provide research/consulting services for Federal tax matters and ghost write full or partial tax returns when fellow tax professionals get stumped.

David and Mary are tax references for many sources including www.money.cnn.com and Green Bay area TV stations.  Mary has been a guest on Wisconsin Public Radio several times.  They have been quoted in various newspapers around the country and have published articles in NATP’s Tax Practitioner Journal and NAEA’s EAJournal.  Several times David has been a guest panelist on the Tax Talk Today show sponsored by NAEA.

They are both members of NATP, NAEA and Fellows of NTPI.  They have served on various NAEA committees.  David is a past editor of the NAEA EAJournal.  For many years Mary wrote the Client Newsletter for the NAEA EAJournal.

Fred J. Forman 

Fred J. Forman, a Magna Cum Laude law school graduate (top 3 percent), is a founding shareholder and director of Forman, Corcoran, Clark & Associates, P.A. Fred, long considered one of New England’s top estate planning, elder law and business attorneys, has been featured in magazines as a “Top Estate Planning, Business & Elder Law Attorney”.

Fred has been a featured speaker at numerous professional seminars including those offered as continuing education for attorneys, accountants, I.R.S. Enrolled Agents and tax assessing officials in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.  He has repeatedly taught courses on Advanced Estate Planning, Sophisticated Estate Planning, Business Succession Planning, Business Law, Asset Protection Planning and Long Term Care Planning to members of the legal and accounting professions.

Fred has authored many articles on a variety of topics related to estate planning, business law, sophisticated asset protection and elder law. For example, Fred has published numerous articles for the National Business Institute, a prestigious and nationally recognized publisher of reference material for the legal community. 

Mary Hanson 
Mary Hanson is a Senior Stakeholder Liaison for the IRS and works out of the Boston Office. She holds a B.A in History from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, MA.  Mary began her career with the Service in 1985 at the IRS Andover Campus. While there, she worked in Adjustments, Collections, Problem Resolution, and the Taxpayer Advocate Service.  In addition to her current position, Mary was a Taxpayer Service Specialist in the Boston IRS Taxpayer Assistance Office providing face to face assistance to tax practitioners and taxpayers.   Mary took a position in Taxpayer Education and Communication in 2001.  In this position, Mary has been a presenter at numerous tax professional and small business organization events.

Jerry Lucente
Jerry Lucente is manager at the Examination division of IRS office in Massachusetts.  He is also teaches at the University of Mass Tax Schools. Jerry is an excellent speaker. 

Joseph B. Darby III
Joseph B. Darby III is a partner in Sullivan & Worcester's Boston office, focusing his practice on business and transactional tax law.
