USA Hire: Lessons Learned from a Federal Online Testing Program

As with any organization, the Federal Government faces many challenges in the competition for top talent. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is in a unique position to assist a large number of federal agencies, with varying and unique missions, with the implementation of best practices in personnel assessment and selection. In the past 20 years, OPM has focused its energy and expertise on leveraging technology to enhance HR processes and practices. One such example is USA Hire, an online testing platform designed to provide federal agencies with an array of high-quality personnel assessments measuring a wide range of critical competencies applicable to multiple occupations across government. In this workshop, Dr. Patrick Sharpe, Manager of the Selection and Promotion Assessment group at OPM, will facilitate an interactive session covering the following areas relevant to online testing:

  • Brief history of personnel testing in the Federal Government
  • The current landscape and need for online testing
  • The development and implementation of the USA Hire online testing platform
  • Challenges and lessons learned from implementation of USA Hire
  • Future directions

In addition to learning about the latest advances in online testing being applied throughout the Federal Government, participants will have an opportunity to ask questions, provide input, and discuss their own experience and expertise in both small group exercises and large group discussion.
