Illinois' Budget: The Path Forward

You are cordially invited to the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability's annual Fiscal Symposium where speakers from across the political spectrum will address the budget impasse; issues related to education, pensions, healthcare, human services; and more. There will be an opportunity for questions and answers.

Keynote Speaker

State Treasurer Michael Frerichs

Michael W. "Mike" Frerichs, State Treasurer, took office on January 12, 2015. Prior to being elected treasurer, he was a Democratic state Senator representing Illinois' 52nd District, which includes Champaign, Danville and Urbana, since 2007.

In the 98th General Assembly, Frerichs served as the chairman of the Higher Education Committee and had previously served as chairman of the Agriculture & Conservation and Enterprise Zone Extensions Committees. He was a sponsor of the Graduated Rate Income Tax proposal and worked to reduce disparities in state education funding. At 6 feet 8 inches, Frerichs is one of the tallest legislators in Illinois history, standing four inches taller than Abraham Lincoln.

Prior to running for public office, Treasurer Frerichs volunteered for his local fire department, served on the board of a local non-profit nursing home, and was a member of the Urbana Rotary Club.  He received his BA from Yale University and then attended National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan where he studied Mandarin Chinese while teaching English.
