Association for Behavioral Healthcare

ICD-10, DSM-5, and Coding & Billing for Behavioral Health Services

September 17, 2015 from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm

Don't be caught off guard without training on the new ICD-10 code changes!

Denials, delays, and "more information required" are increasingly common responses from Medicare, managed care, and insurance companies for behavioral health claims and requests for payment.  On October 1st, 2015, the behavioral health field will transition to ICD-10 diagnostic coding (and DSM-5 diagnostic criteria).  Diagnostic criteria and codes, procedure codes, and policy changes have further complicated the reimbursement process for provider organizations, social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, counselors, and clinical nurse specialists.

Consolidating all of the new requirements with existing code rules and implementing proven billing techniques are the objectives of this concise, one-day seminar.  Participants will learn the most current and accurate coding procedures coupled with documentation tips and complete definitions to ensure prompt and optimal payment for future insurance claims.

What you will learn:

  • Strategies to prepare for ICD-10-CM
  • Identify and use all current and new procedure codes for behavioral health services
  • Discuss problem areas of documentation for behavioral health services
  • Documentation necessary to support reimbursement
  • Apply Medicare rules and payment policy
  • Apply Medicare rules for clinical psychologist and clinical social worker services
  • Discuss reimbursement strategies
  • Outline procedures for conducting an internal review of coding and documentation

Trainer: Sherry Marchand, CPMA, is a reimbursement analyst and a billing, collection, and chart-auditing consultant with more than 25 years of expereince in the health care industry, including hospital and physician group billing, and collection management.  She has served as an expert witness/consultant in Medicare, Medicaid, ALJ hearings, and criminal fraud cases.  Her vast knowledge of the practice management process has come from working in various levels of health care accounting.  As a certified practice management consultant and chart auditor, Ms. Marchand has helped numerous practices take control of their cash flow through implementation of billing and documentation processes.  Ms. Marchand has many tips and tools to further providers on the road to healthy clients and insurance collections.

Target Audience: Billing and Coding Staff; Staff - including clinical staff - that need to understand the interface between ICD-10 and DSM-5.

Fee: $75 per person for ABH Members ($100 per person for non-members), includes continental breakfast and lunch

Note: The training includes an interactive section for which you may wish to bring a smartphone or tablet.
