Join us for the Arizona Council for the Social Studies' Annual Conference, the premier conference for Arizona Social Studies Educators!

Keynote Address:

Melissa Sanderson is Vice President of International Affairs at Freeport-McMoRan, Inc. In this capacity, she works with Freeport’s government and public relations functions, as well as with the corporate social responsibility group on projects and issues relevant to Freeport’s overseas operations in Chile, Peru, Indonesia and Congo, as well as Native American issues in the U.S. Mel was previously an Economics Officer at the U.S. State Department, where she served for over 20 years. Her last diplomatic posting was as Political Counselor in the Democratic Republic of Congo following the end of that country’s war and its transition to democracy. In 2006, while still in Congo, she was recruited by Freeport McMoRan to represent the company as Vice President for Africa. She stayed another four years in DRC before accepting a promotion and returning to the Phoenix corporate headquarters in 2010.

We are part of the network of more than 110 affiliated state, local, and regional councils and associated groups with the National Council for the Social Studies. Our membership represents K-12 classroom teachers, college and university faculty members, curriculum designers and specialists, social studies supervisors, and leaders in the various disciplines that constitute the social studies.
