Dr. Brian Latell will discuss U.S.Foreign Policy with Cuba

Speaker Profile:
Dr Brian Latell has been a Latin America and Caribbean specialist for more than four decades.  During his 35 years of service in the CIA and the National Intelligence Council he advised White House and other ranking American officials and members of Congress on Latin American developments.. He is the author of Castro’s Secrets: The CIA and Cuba’s Intelligence Machine (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012). 
 Dr. Latell’s After Fidel: The Inside Story of Castro’s Regime and Cuba’s Next Leader (Palgrave Macmillan) was published in 2005, followed by an expanded paperback edition, After Fidel: Raul Castro and the Future of Cuba’s Revolution. It is also available in seven foreign languages and audio disc. He is co-editor of Eye in the Sky, a history of the Corona reconnaissance satellite program (Smithsonian Press, 1998).  Dr. Latell has published opinion and feature articles in the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Miami Herald, Time, New York Daily News, the Washington Quarterly, and other major publications in North America, Europe, and Latin America. He has been employed by television networks as a Cuba news consultant and commentator.

Currently, he serves as Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Cuban and Cuban American Studies at the University of Miami, where he writes a regular column on Cuba and teaches as an adjunct professor. In 1985-1986 he was a Senior Associate at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and published extensively, including an important monograph, Mexico at the Crossroads. Later, he was on staff for several years at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. From 1990-1994 Dr. Latell served as National Intelligence Officer for Latin America, the highest ranking position for the region in all of the American intelligence agencies. Before retiring from government service in 1998, he was the Director of the Center for the Study of Intelligence, serving also as chairman of the editorial board of Studies in Intelligence, the official journal of the profession. He had responsibility for all CIA historical programs and research. He taught Latin America and American foreign policy making at the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University for 26 years as an adjunct professor. He is the recipient of numerous academic and professional awards, including the CIA’s Distinguished Intelligence Medal.
