Increasing Cultural Competency through Self-Reflections Seminar

LEND Activity

Date: Thursday, September 24, 2015

Time: 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm (EST) *dinner is provided (4:00 pm - 4:30 pm)

 Speakers:  Sara Davis, LCSW-C

                   Sheryl Jefferson, MSW

Who should attend: All LEND trainees

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identifying and expressing pride in the identity groups to which we belong
  2. Recognizing strengths and struggles experienced by different cultural groups
  3. Increasing awareness of various stereotypes that have been learned and internalized

It is strongly recommended that you visit the Implicit Association Test (IAT)  website and take at least one of the IATs in preparation for this seminar.

The IAT measures attitudes and beliefs that people may be unwilling or unable to report. The IAT may be especially interesting if it shows that you have an implicit attitude that you did not know about. For example, you may believe that women and men should be equally associated with science, but your automatic associations could show that you (like many others) associate men with science more than you associate women with science.
