The Women's Fund Forum on Mental Health

The forum is titled From One Community to Another: What San Antonio is Learning from New Approaches to Mental Health.

Please join us in welcoming our guest speaker, Leon Evans, President & CEO of the Center for Healthcare Services in San Antonio, Texas. As heard on NPR, the Restoration Center offers a 48-hour inpatient psychiatric unit, outpatient services for psychiatric and primary care; centers for drug or alcohol detox; a 90-day recovery program for substance abuse; plus housing for people with mental illnesses, and even job training. San Antonio's community effort is held up as an example across the nation:

In addition to The Restoration Center, Evans has spearheaded the development of a number of nationally recognized initatives including the Bexar County Jail Diversion Program, the 24/7 Crisis Care Center, and Crisis Intervention Training for public safety officers.

This Women's Fund Forum is presented by The Women's Fund of the Shasta Regional Community Foundation and the Record Searchlight.

What We Hope to Learn

Redding already has a number of important efforts underway to address mental health, so our focus here will be to understand what we can learn from this case study of success. Questions to include:

  • What kind of leadership model was required to move this forward?
  • What are the lessons about collaboration (on the Bexar County Safety Net Community Collaborative for Mental Health Transformation) that any community could learn from?
  • According to NPR, this model saved San Antonio $50 million from 2009-2014, so how did the funding work out?
  • More than 18,000 people pass through the Restoration Center each year, can you share a success story of an individual that has made an impact on you?
  • Since San Antonio's population is larger than Redding's, which parts of your approach do you think would be most applicable in smaller communities like ours?

Please Note: Due to anticipated attendance at this forum, we are unable to provide lunch. Food is not allowed in the auditorium, so we advise eating before or afterwards.Thank you for joining us in this important conversation for our community.
