About the Speaker: Teresa May-Benson is the Executive Director of the Spiral Foundation as well as a practicing occupational therapist at OTA The Koomar Center. She is active in conducting research related to sensory integration through the Spiral Foundation’s Sensory Processing Research Center and Laboratory. She is a well-known lecturer and researcher on sensory integration theory and intervention, has authored book chapters and articles on praxis and sensory integration, and completed her doctoral dissertation on ideational praxis. Dr. May-Benson received her bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and her master’s degree from Boston University with a concentration in sensory integration and school system therapy. She was a Maternal and Child Health Fellow in the Doctoral Program in Therapeutic Studies at Boston University. She has received the Virginia Scardinia Award of Excellence from AOTA for her work in ideational praxis.

This one day course will provide an overview of the development of early motor skills and praxis, with an emphasis on the contributions of infant reflexes and the role of motor development and praxis on motor performance. Participants will also learn intervention strategies for addressing difficulties in these areas. The course format includes a combination of lectures, videos, and discussion sessions.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the typical course of early motor development and its relation to praxis.
  2. Explain the role of infant reflexes in later movement patterns and praxis.
  3. Identify how praxis difficulties affect motor performance and function.
  4. Apply knowledge about motor development and praxis to create practical intervention strategies.

Movement and Vision Working Together: Facilitating Visual-Vestibular Integration in Praxis Intervention

This course will address how to support intervention of visual-vestibular aspects of functioning related to praxis deficits, with an emphasis on improving foundational function visual/oculo-motor and vestibular processing difficulties. Participants will learn about the neurological foundations of visual-vestibular processing as related to praxis as well as intervention strategies for effective treatment of spatial-temporal organization, including projected action sequences and bilateral coordination skills. Course format is a combination of lectures, videos, and lab activities.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Describe how visual-vestibular dysfunction relates to and impacts praxis functioning.
  2. Identify the neuroanatomical foundations of visual-vestibular related praxis functions.
  3. Articulate a range of intervention strategies to address core praxis skills including bilateral coordination and projected action sequences, visual-vestibular integration and spatio-temporal integration.
