Understanding & Mitigating Natural Gas Leaks in Massachusetts
As a result of the law “An Act Relative to Natural Gas Leaks,” in 2015, Massachusetts natural gas utilities began publicly reporting the location of leaks along their natural gas pipelines, classified by severity and age. The quantity of leaks has made headlines, and many municipalities are eager to gain insight into:
- The extent of the risk
- How to mitigate the issue through the new data, local policy changes and potential legislation
To help answer these questions, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council, in partnership with HEET (Home Energy Efficiency Team), has convened a panel of municipal, academic, and regulatory experts. The panel will report on:
- The existing regulations that govern gas utilities
- The procedures currently performed to monitor and improve the system
- The impact of natural gas leaks
- Published data on the location and severity of existing leaks
- Best practices for planning and coordinating pipeline repair with utilities
- Pending legislation and its potential impact
Municipalities are well positioned to be effective partners to help accelerate pipeline repair. Please join us to find out more and participate in this important dialogue.
