Alternative Investments in Public Pension Plans

Lilly Palmieri, MBA, CAIA, CFA, CIPM

Lilly is a senior investment consultant at the largest institutional investor in British Columbia.

She will compare and contrast the alternative investment landscape of the Canadian public pension plans with some large public plans in the U.S.

  • What are the differences between Canadian public plans and U.S. plans?
  • What are some of the major challenges going forward?
  • How are these large institutional investors dealing with them?
  • How are they taking what have been the lessons learned since the Financial Crisis?

Speaker Bios

Lilly Palmieri, MBA, CAIA, CFA, CIPM

Lilly is a senior investment consultant currently working for British Columbia's largest institutional investor.

Having recently moved to Canada from the US, her professional experience includes working in international treasury operations a Fortune 100 company, advised global institutional clients on currency and derivative risk management strategies at Bank of America  and a boutique investment firm in New York, and as an institutional investment consultant for what is now Segal RogersCasey . Lilly has worked with large public pension plans, defined contribution plans, and foundations and endowments on asset allocation and manager selection across all asset classes. She also provides input to CFA review course materials as a subject matter expert.

Lilly has earned her Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designations, the Certificate in Investment Performance Management (CIPM ) and is currently working on her Financial Risk Manager (FRM) designation. She has an MBA  (with Distinction) from Pace University in New York City.

 

Bill Kelly

William (Bill) J. Kelly, CEO of the CAIA Association, is an asset management industry veteran with extensive managerial and boardroom experience gained through successive CFO, COO, CEO and Independent Board director roles. He has led both start-ups and full scale global organizations. Bill is the former CEO of Robeco Investment Management, a subsidiary of the Netherlands-based global asset management organization with over $200 billion of assets under management, where he oversaw all aspects of United States business, including portfolio management, distribution and product development. He also was responsible for the strategic growth, introduction, and positioning of new managed products in the US and Europe, including alternative investments. Bill was a founder and former CEO of Boston Partners Asset Management, a self-funded partnership enterprise, which became one of the industry’s largest and most successful start-up money management organizations. Previous to that, he served as CFO of The Boston Company Asset Management and earlier in his career held various positions at Bear Stearns and was an auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers.
