3:30-5:00pm Choices

Social Reports and a Social Policy FrameworkMichael Davis, Partner and Managing Director of Reputations and Chair of Board Voice

  • This working session will be an opportunity for participants to explore some of the content and planning related to these two important initiatives and help the board design effective strategies for moving them into the public realm.

Excellence in Board Governance - Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice  –        Dr. Vic Murray, Adjunct Professor, School of Public Administration, University of Victoria

  • This interactive workshop will engage participants in conversations about the barriers that keep non-profit board of directors from reaching optimal effectiveness and why many have difficulty in making the necessary changes.  Recent research will form the basis of this discussion.

Social Innovation, Resilience and Reconciliation - David Stevenson, Executive Director, Partnerships and Community Renewal Division, Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation

  • This interactive workshop will explore approaches to learning, innovation and impact within the challenging space of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples within the social services sector.
  • The insight that "if you are not a part of the problem, you cannot be a part of the solution," suggests that the work of having an impact for positive change is an inside job - inside meaning personally and within the larger social systems we find ourselves in.  This is certainly true for efforts at reconciliation in all sectors of society, and the "social services sector" is at the heart of this challenge.

Developing a Leadership Board – Mark Friesen, Consulting Manager, Vantage Point

  • A highly effective and engaged board has clarity around roles, responsibilities, and aligns their work and performance with organizational values and mission.  In this session we will:  Review tools to align the passion and skills of board members; Learn how to become a more effective and engaged group that is accountable to the organizational mission and vision; Carry out three key modes of governance:  fiduciary oversight, strategic direction, and generative visioning.
